How much should changing locks cost?

My house was recently broken into and the person took the keys to my house. I called a locksmith immediately and they changed my locks (4) and handed me a bill for almost $800. Did i just get ripped off??|||If it%26#039;s so simple, then tell us how! Who knows what it should cost for decent hardware? Two locks/handles and deadbolts.

ty|||You could have saved the service call fee by removing the locks yourself and taking them to the Locksmith to be REKEYED (which is cheaper than completely replacing). If you make 2 trips (knobs then deadbolts) you don%26#039;t even have to have the house unlocked.

|||You say you called the locksmith immediately. Do you mean nights or weekends? That would cost more than having him come during normal business hours. Also, the number and type of locks he used makes a difference. The lock sets you see at a HD or Lowes are not what any locksmith I know would use. That makes sense, because the big stores just want to advertise the lowest prices. Most of their customers are not focused on quality. A locksmith has to charge for his time, so better quality locks are only an incremental difference.|||It should have at the most been $200.|||it depends on whats involved, and what type of lock, but i%26#039;d do it for around 20 bucks depending on how many locks.Changing locks is simple.|||Yes, especially since you could have gone to Wal-Mart and gotten a set of locks with deadbolts for less than $50.00...they%26#039;re real easy to install.|||You can buy a double set of door handles and dead bolts at Menards for under 100.00, all it takes is a phillips screw driver and noone telling you, you can%26#039;t do it.|||$800 did he install Medecos or Fischers? If you have Segal or some other crappy lock, yes, you were ripped off. Did he just change locks/cylinders or did he also install additional deadbolts. Can%26#039;t say anything without more detail.

Invisiman, what kind of crappy hardware do you have on your house? $50 for a couple of locks? That%26#039;s what caused her break-in to begin with, cheap hardware.
