How much is to much when changing locks on a home? I have 3 doors with 2 locks each on them.?

I dont want to spend a fortune. And should you key them all the same?

New home owner|||Change all of the locks. Money vs. Safety...chose safety. It%26#039;s a necessary cost of having a new home. Don%26#039;t scrimp.

Yes, you can have them all keyed with the same key...which is exactly what you want to do.

But spend whatever it takes...you life, security, and safety are worth every cent.|||I don%26#039;t know why you need two locks on each door.

My mother used top say locks on doors only keep honest people honest.

If a person wants to get into your home when your not home two locks won%26#039;t stop them. They will simply kick the door in.

If you are that concerned about someone breaking in to your home because of where you live, mabe you should consider a security service such as Brinks who will moniter your home 24/7|||The inexpensive route is to have a lock smith and change them. If you don%26#039;t like the look of the hardware it will cost about $150. to replace them all. Yes they should all be keyed alike.|||I suspect the door locks are pretty secure, especially if they are 2%26quot; throws.

I%26#039;d start looking at the other parts of the house and the materials. Are the doors solid wood or metal?? If they are hollow doors, then 20 locks don%26#039;t make it secure.|||Brands such as Kwikset or Schlage are sufficient for most areas and they come in a wide variety of styles and finishes to match almost any decor. I have installed both types of locks and I have decided that purely from an ease of installation stand point I prefer Schlage. The internals of the locks make for a much simpler process. If you want to get all of your locks keyed the same, which makes for a much lighter key ring, there are two options that you can take. First, you can sort through all the locks of the same style at a store and pick out the locks with matching keys, They only produce limited numbers of each pin layout, so you might need to go back a few times to find enough locks of the same number. The other option is to install random keyed locks and then convert them to the same key. To do this you either need to call a bonded Locksmith, or if you live in a locality that allows it you can buy a rekeying set for only a few dollars and rekey the lock your self, It isn%26#039;t that difficult and is kind of fun if you enjoy that kind of thing. And, remember, if you install the locks yourself, the doorknob goes in the hole that is about 1 meter off the ground and the deadbolt goes in the hole above that.

More info about buying keyed alike locks:

On the back of the packaging for Kwikset and Schlage locks, there is a sticker with a large number on it, that number relates to the key that will open the lock. When you buy new locks that you want to be keyed the same, look at that sticker and buy locks that all have the same number on it. This will allow you to get all new locks that are all keyed the same, for NO extra cost vs. buying mismatched locks. If you want all your locks to be keyed the same you absolutely must buy all the same brand, since kwikset keys won%26#039;t fit schlage and vice-a-versa.|||You should change all locks. You never know who may still have keys to your new home.

You can get decent kwickset locksets for about $25.00 per door. Getting them all keyed alike is liable to double that price.

Check out a Lowes and look for deals on combo packs of locksets. If you can install them yourself that would help keep your costs down.

No need to go overboard on expensive locks. Chances are a breakin would come through a window anyway.
